Cardboard Boxes & Dividers for Laboratory Sample Storage

Cardboard boxes are the most versatile and economical of the storage box options available to the researcher. The variety of sizes and divider configurations for small lab-type samples is extensive. Basic paper coated boxes as well as a moisture resistant standard box are available.

A box described as a standard 2" box means the height is 2" and the sides are 5-1/4" square. A 3" box is 3" high, and so on.

The cardboard box offerings are broken into catagories of specialization as described below:
There are certain containers that have trationally been used to store lab samples that have become known as "standard". For the square boxes it means the sides are both 5-1/4" (the height of the box may vary). There is a smaller version called a "mini" that is 3" on a side and can either be called a standard box or a special.

Because the 100-cell divider became very popular for arranging Cryovials in boxes the use of the "special" size box came along. This box is 5-3/8" square and better accomodates the external thread Cryovial in the 10 across configuration. This small difference can be very important when choosing storage racks, so be sure the rack can take this size box.

Bullet boxes and mini boxes also can fall in this category simply because they are not 5-1/4" square.

"Special" boxes use "special" dividers (typically only the 100-cell divider is used for the 5-3/8" box)
Occassionally an even larger box is required for specialty used such as storing 15ml and 50ml centrifuge tubes. These boxes are 5-3/4" square, vary in height, and use "large" dividers
